I highly recommend that as a young man, the goal should be to become self-sufficient. There are many ways to do this, start a business, join the military, save money and invest properly. Once you are self-sufficient, e.g. have your own home, have enough money to take care of yourself, etc. , the rest will follow.
This does not mean don't follow your passions, just make money. It means by having a basic foundation, it is a lot easier to follow your passions. I see this somewhat as a personalization of Maslow's pyramid. Money takes care of so much of the base of the pyramid that it allows an individual to do focus more time on the top.

I think self-sufficiency is a great thing for a young man to build in himself or to build upon. However, I think self sufficiency is NOT only measured in material terms but also in spiritual terms. So in addition to the things he might acquire to be self sufficient, he should also acquire the experiences to be spiritually self sufficient. By this I mean, 1) go on a meditation retreat, 2) allow himself to fall in love, 3) find opportunities to feel deeply and 4) get involved in a spirited struggle. All these will certainly add to a sense of self sufficiency because they expose vulnerability and require self reliance.
