I highly recommend that as a young man, the goal should be to become self-sufficient. There are many ways to do this, start a business, join the military, save money and invest properly. Once you are self-sufficient, e.g. have your own home, have enough money to take care of yourself, etc. , the rest will follow.
This does not mean don't follow your passions, just make money. It means by having a basic foundation, it is a lot easier to follow your passions. I see this somewhat as a personalization of Maslow's pyramid. Money takes care of so much of the base of the pyramid that it allows an individual to do focus more time on the top.

Life: What is it all about?
At age 40+, being half way done -- or almost if I am lucky to live as long as President Ford -- I cannot help wonder what life is really about. Is it the sum of my experiences and so therefore, I should just keep accumulating?
Or is it more about achievements, e.g. what have I done, or what contributions have I made?
At this point, I cannot help, but think it is the latter. And so I am sitting with the thought of what do I want my legacy to be.
